Overview
These docs explain how Chartnaut uses AI — what each assistant does, how research with AI fits together, and how billing works. You can use every research tool by hand; AI is there to speed up the same work, not replace it.
How Chartnaut uses AI
Chartnaut is built around agents that use the same screens and libraries you do. Nothing runs in a black box: chat assistants create normal indicators, definitions, studies, and pins that stay in your account after the conversation ends.
Area | What AI helps with | Where in the app |
|---|---|---|
Indicators | Describe custom chart math; chat drafts and edits indicator code; preview on a chart. | Indicators → open a builder |
Definitions | Describe when a setup appears; chat drafts definition logic and helps you collect historical events. | Definitions → open a builder |
Studies | Ask what happens after a setup; chat helps author and run studies. Includes AI trade search — plain-language search over Trades to find fills, filter, or pin a set. | Definitions (studies on a definition) · Trades (AI search) |
Conductor | One chat thread across the full research job — definition, collect, study, and chart pin — with your approval at each step. | Conductor |
This section also documents the manual research pipeline (define → collect → study → pin) for when you want to click through yourself, mix AI with hand-editing, or understand what Conductor is doing under the hood.
AI credits and models
AI is pay-as-you-go. Starter, Pro, and Ultra include charts, backtesting, broker connections, and research limits — but not a monthly AI allowance. You keep an AI credits balance and top up in Settings → Subscription. See Plans and limits for what each plan includes vs what costs extra.
Each AI chat has a model picker. Choose the model directly in Conductor, the Definition / Study / Indicator builders, and AI trade search. Chartnaut lists models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Fireworks (open-weight models). Each model shows an estimated cost per message — cheaper models are fine for quick edits; larger models cost more credits and suit long research threads or heavy code changes.
Heavier models use more credits. For a long Conductor session, check your balance before you start. Usage history lives on the same Subscription page. Details: Subscription and AI credits.
Common questions
What is Conductor and when should I use it? Conductor is for end-to-end research in one thread — you describe a setup you want to test, and the agent proposes each step. Start here if you want guidance more than menus. → Conductor overview
How does research work — with or without AI? You describe a setup (definition), gather every time it appeared (collect), measure what happened next (study), and optionally show the result on your live chart (pin). → Research overview
I want to build a definition myself (maybe with chat help). → Create a definition and Definition builder
How do I search my trades in plain English? Part of Studies in the table above — AI trade search over executed fills in Trades, not historical setup events. → AI trade search
What's the difference between a research study and a trade study? Research studies run over setup events from a definition. Trade studies run over fills you actually took. → Studies overview · Trade studies
What are definitions, studies, indicators, and pins? Short comparison of the building blocks. → Compare building blocks
How much will AI cost me? Credits depend on which model you pick and how much you chat. Plans don't bundle AI — you top up as needed. → Subscription and AI credits
